Why the urgency?

Big polluters, aided by a legion of lobbyists and fuelled by a half billion dollar war chest, have paralyzed the Congress. What is worse, they are pressing to go further, by rolling back environmental protections that have been on the books for decades.

This is the year the Senate failed to pass a comprehensive climate-energy bill. It's ironically also on course to be the hottest year ever recorded by science.

There is no meaningful controversy over the fact that we are dangerously close to an irreversible course toward catastrophic climate change.

Yet the Senate does nothing.

Actually, worse than nothing. As I write this, global warming deniers and industry lobbyists are seeking to gather enough votes to weaken the Clean Air Act. Their goal: to limit the EPA of its authority to regulate climate pollution.

And they are taking their fight on the road. Two huge Texas oil companies are pouring millions into a California ballot initiative to negate that state's 2006 landmark climate law.

We can beat back this assault on environmental and economic reason. We have the truth on our side. And we have thousands of citizens, folks like you, who are unprepared to take this sitting down.
